Yes, it is safe for your system to play with your PS3 online. The PS3 is designed to play online and it is no worse playing online then it is playing offline. However, online interactions online may not be safe for children as sometimes things will be said that are not PG.

∙ 10y agoIn theory it is. In practice, even big companies are vulnerable to security breaches. Sony suffered a PSN outage due to a large security breach that compromised a thousands of accounts. You can rest assured that they'll be taking it much more seriously now after being fined for the breach, but keep in mind it can happen to anyone.

It's illegal to download games and play 'em for free on your PlayStation 3 - but that is a whole other story ;)
